Are you suffering from sciarid fly in the potting soil of your houseplants? Or do you have a veritable infestation of thrips in your vegetable greenhouse? Hypoaspis is a complementary product used in the fight against these pests.

What is Hypoaspis?
Hypoaspis is a tube, filled with moist peaty material and predatory mites Stratiolaelaps scimitus.

The predatory mites are beige in color and only 1 mm in size. This predator is very mobile, naturally lives in the upper soil layer (1-4 cm deep) and feeds there on harmful soil insects. In addition to springtails, thrips pupae and sciarid larvae, practice shows that this predatory mite also has a secondary effect on millipedes, root aphids and other harmful soil organisms.

The predatory mite is active at temperatures above 10°C. The ideal temperature is between 15 and 28°C. The predatory mites do not survive periods of frost.

Hypoaspis feels at home in moist (potting) soil (30% soil moisture) and can go up to 7 weeks without food.

When to use Hypoaspis?
In case of sciarid fly: Use Hypoaspis in combination with Stenema nematodes in case of heavy infestation of sciarid flies. Stenema is the basic product against sciarids. Hypoaspis is the complementary product. If you have plants that are not in potting soil or a similar substrate, STENEMA cannot be used and you should choose Hypoaspis.

In case of thrips: Hypoaspis will control the thrips pupae in the soil. This makes sense for greenhouse vegetables and grapes where the thrips pupae pupate in the soil. In case of houseplants, the thrips usually pupate on the plants themselves. Hypoaspis on its own is insufficient to control thrips. Use in combination predatory mites and/or predatory bugs to control thrips on the leaves.

How to use Hypoaspis?
Distribute the predatory mites together with the filling material in heaps on the soil or potting compost. The predatory mites will automatically leave the filling material and search for food in the soil.

How many predatory mites are needed?
At high infection pressure and/or a short cultivation period 500 to 1000 Hypoaspis/m² are used.
At low infection pressure and/or a longer cultivation period 50 to 500 Hypoaspis/m² are used.

Can I store Hypoaspis predatory mites?
Hypoaspis are live predatory mites that should be released as soon as possible after receipt. The material can be stored for several days in a moist room at 12 to 15 ° C (basement). However, as the material can dry out very quickly, the cardboard tubes should remain moist. Therefore, roll them in a moist towel. Never put the tube in the refrigerator, that is too cold!
