STENEMA Nematodes against Sciarid larvae

Do you see small, black flies in your home or near your houseplants? Are your plants deteriorating rapidly? Then you may be suffering from mourning fly. The adult flies are irritating, but do little damage. The larvae of these flies eat the roots of your houseplants in the soil. Do you want to fight this pest quickly and ecologically to save your houseplants? Then you need Stenema nematodes! What are nematodes and how do they work? You can read that below.

Stenema nematodes against sciarid larvae
Fighting sciarid larvae is easy and effective with nematodes. Stenema contains active Steinernema Feltiae nematodes which parasitize sciarid larvae. This kills the larvae and prevents adult fungus gnats from developing.

Advantages of Stenema nematodes
Harmless to plants
Safe for children and pets
No problem with resistance
Gives no odor nuisance in your living room
Works much better than a chemical agent
100 % natural pesticide
Available all year round
How many nematodes do I need?
Normally a small package of Stenema for 10 m² is sufficient to treat all your houseplants. You can treat a total of 500 liters of potting soil with this package. So you may already have some houseplants! Only people with an oversized collection or a very severe infestation need a package for 100 m² (5000 liters of potting soil).

How quickly does Stenema work?
It all depends on how heavy your infestation is. If you have many black flies, you will need to be patient for 2 to 3 weeks before all the larvae in the potting soil are infected. With a light infestation the problem may be solved after a few days.

A second factor is the amount of nematodes you give. If you overdose because you have only a few plants, you will see results faster. Overdosing can't do any harm! If you have a heavy infestation, we even recommend overdosing.

How to use nematodes against mourning flies
The potting soil of the houseplants in advance moist.
Dissolve nematodes in water and dilute if necessary (depending on the number of pots).
Pour the mixture into the wet potting soil of all your houseplants, even those which are not affected yet should be treated.
Keep potting soil moist as long as mourning flies are visibly present. Do not make it a mud but make your potting soil feel like a forest soil in the shade.
With this method, the product will be effective in the soil for 4 weeks to kill the mourning fly larvae present. Nematodes can be used year-round in the home. Outside, the Stenema nematodes can be applied from a soil temperature of 10 to 12 ° C.

Combating sciarid fly in the cultivation of plants
Stenema nematodes can be used both preventively and curatively against leaf-minerals. Below we briefly explain what these treatments look like so you can choose the best option for your situation.

Preventive control of mourning flies
For young seedlings and cuttings, mourning flies are a regular problem during the first 6 weeks of cultivation. By treating preventively, you prevent the fungus gnats from developing. Normally one treatment with nematodes is sufficient. Do you have slow growing plants? Then we recommend a second treatment after 5 weeks.

Curative fungus gnats control
Do you start using nematodes at the time the sciarid flies are already present? Then it takes about 2 weeks after treatment before the adult flies are gone and your problem is solved. The only disadvantage is that young plants may die during this period.

How to store Stenema?
Stenema is a live product and therefore has a limited shelf life in the fridge at 5°C. Always use it before the expiration date printed on the package. It is best to order Stenema when you need it.

What if I can't get rid of my mourning flies?
It is rare that people do not get rid of their mourning flies. However, we do occasionally see that people are no longer bothered after a few weeks, but the problem comes back after a month or more. This can happen:

If you bring in a new infestation with herb plants or new houseplants.
If you sow or grow a lot of plants yourself: this automatically attracts mourning flies
